QUEER BUDAPEST: KIÁLLÍTÁS 2020

NOVEMBER 7 - 8

SKURC GROUP, ZSILIP UTCA 9, BUDAPEST 1044

QUEER BUDAPEST'S INAUGURAL EXHIBITION

AS FAR-RIGHT POLITICS HAVE SWEPT ACROSS EUROPE, SO HAS HOMOPHOBIA AND HATRED. INGRAINED NOT ONLY AT A SOCIETAL LEVEL, IT HAS BECOME INSTITUTIONALISED AND SYSTEMIC FROM THE POLITICAL LEADERSHIP. THIS IS EXTREMELY NOTICEABLE IN HUNGARY.

OVER THE COURSE OF IT'S 10 YEARS IN POWER THE RULING FIDESZ PARTY HAS INCREASINGLY MARGINALISED THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY WHICH MAKES QUEER VISIBILITY AND PRESENCE IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN OF VITAL IMPORTANCE. THIS IS AN OVER-RIDING PRINCIPLE OF QUEER BUDAPEST, TO GIVE SPACE TO AND SHOW THE QUEER COMMUNITY IN ALL ITS GLORY.

QUEER BUDAPEST IS CURATED ACROSS THREE INTERCONNECTED BUT DISTINCT AREAS; THE FIRST PART SEEKS TO GIVE SPACE TO ARTISTS WORKING WITH A MORE POLITICISED VOICE AND WHOSE WORK SPEEKS OF THE MARGINALISATION OF THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY. THE SECOND PART EXPLORES CREATIVES DOCUMENTING AND CONTRIBUTING TO THE VIBRANT NIGHTLIFE SCENE IN BUDAPEST, PROVIDING SAFE SPACES FOR THE QUEER COMMUNITY AND SITES FOR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. THE THIRD PART IS BUILT AROUND BELONGING AND THE IDEAS OF COMMUNITY.
